Reviews

Oor (21-8-1999):
With his Thom Yorke-sounding voice Michael Milo strongly influences the music of King Me. He started off as a one-man project, but operates with 7 others now. The songs can be categorized as lo-fi guitar rock and make me think off Tindersticks and Radiohead.

Platomania (20-8-1999):
Named after a Palace Brothers song, King Me is an authors release project of Rotterdam's Michael Milo. In 8 songs (plus Will Oldham's I See A Darkness) Milo shows that he knows how to write a song. Sometimes, like in the sad Lisa's Song, the songs have wonderful arrangements, Miss You and Crazy are vicious guitar pop like Club Diana. There can be made remarks about the sometimes maybe too obvious shown influences: the Venus In Furs violin in Tattoo and the Cortez The Killer guitar in Stay, but well: you could have worse influences. With a little more nerve King me can range oneself between Dutch' lo-fi greatest like Blimey! and Club Diana.

CD of the Month (august 1999) CD of the Year (1999)
What a great record! King Me makes alternative guitar pop like Pavement and the Radiohead of OK Computer. On this debut the band combines noisy riffs and menacing distorted vocals with hovering vocal melodies and beautiful string arrangements. The CD contains nine jewels, without a weak moment. The climax is the song Stay, maybe one of the best songs ever written by a Dutch band. So much of honest drama, so much of dynamics. The choruses cut right through you in a way that hurts. This counts for more moments on the CD. The songs are in a variety of styles, but have all the same mood. The CD breathes a dark, melancholic feeling, without getting too depressed. The production is in complete balance with the songs. Raw, dynamic, sometimes lo-fi.

Livexs (October 1999):
Singer Michael Milo and his band have released a varied album. Sensitive, sober songs are followed by rock songs. Distorted guitars, violin and cello make a beautiful whole. They are at their best when they are obstinate. This promises a lot!

Opscene (October 1999):
You will not find Dutch bands like King Me on the bill of concert halls. What a shame! This 9-tracks containing CD is full of great ideas. And they are worked out well for once. The slow, noisy Tattoo can be found on the Opscene CD. Does this song represent the band? Not for the mood of the song, but it represents the quality of the songs. Songs differ in tempo, from fast en sparkling to dramatic and romantic. And in between that there's a lot to be found out. King Me has it all without forgetting themselves. Well, who can play a Will Oldham track (I See a Darkness) in such a moving way must have a lot of talent.

A minha grande surpresa do ano!!!
